Brampton Driveway Widening Rules for Estates of Credit Ridge
By-law 32-2026 for Estates of Credit Ridge homes: driveway widths for 40, 50 and 60 foot lots, the 0.6 m landscaping strip and curb cut permits.

Brampton rewrote its driveway rules in 2026. Council passed By-law 32-2026 on February 25, 2026, setting new maximum widths, a permeable landscaping strip along the side lot lines, and stricter limits in older “mature” neighbourhoods. This guide explains which rules apply in Estates of Credit Ridge and how they line up with the lot widths found here.
How wide can my driveway be in Estates of Credit Ridge?
It depends on lot width. Outside the mature neighbourhood area, By-law 32-2026 allows 7.0 m (23 ft) on lots 30 to 50 feet wide, 7.32 m (24 ft) or the garage width on lots 50 to 60 feet, and 9.14 m (30 ft) or the garage width from 60 feet. The minimum is 3.0 m.
| Lot width | Maximum driveway width |
|---|---|
| Under 8.23 m (27 ft) | 4.9 m (16 ft) |
| 8.23 m to under 9.14 m (27 to 30 ft) | 5.5 m (18 ft) |
| 9.14 m to under 15.24 m (30 to 50 ft) | 7.0 m (23 ft) |
| 15.24 m to under 18.3 m (50 to 60 ft) | 7.32 m (24 ft) or the width of the garage, whichever is greater |
| 18.3 m (60 ft) and wider | 9.14 m (30 ft) or the width of the garage, whichever is greater |
| Driveway on the flankage (side street) lot line of any lot | 7.0 m (23 ft) or the width of the garage, whichever is greater |
The width is measured across the driveway and applies along its whole length, including any paved walkway beside it that a car could park on. The rules apply to detached, semi-detached and townhouse lots, with exceptions for estate and rural zones (RE1, RE2, REH, RHm1, RHm2, RH and A).
Is Estates of Credit Ridge in the mature neighbourhood area?
No. Schedule J-1 of By-law 32-2026 maps the Mature Neighbourhood Driveway Regulation Area, and its boundary runs along Chinguacousy Road and McLaughlin Road in this part of the city, well east of Creditview Road. Estates of Credit Ridge sits outside it, so the city-wide width table above applies rather than the tighter 6 m mature-area limits.
In the mature area, most lots under 22 m wide are held to 6.0 m and no more than half the yard, with a taper to the garage width near the garage. If you are reading advice written for older central Brampton streets, check which rules it describes. What do the rules mean for 40, 50 and 60 foot lots here?
Most homes here sit on lots about 40 or 50 feet wide at the street. Lots in the 30 to 50 foot range can have a 7.0 m (23 ft) driveway. Lots 50 to 60 feet wide can have 7.32 m or the garage width, and lots 60 feet and wider can have 9.14 m or the garage width.
| Lot width at the street | Lots in Estates of Credit Ridge | Maximum driveway under By-law 32-2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Under 36 ft | 114 | Depends on the exact width: 4.9 m, 5.5 m or 7.0 m |
| About 40 ft (36 to 44 ft) | 587 | 7.0 m (23 ft) |
| About 50 ft (45 to 54 ft) | 708 | 7.0 m under 50 ft; 7.32 m or garage width from 50 ft |
| About 60 ft (55 to 65 ft) | 261 | 7.32 m or garage width under 60 ft; 9.14 m or garage width from 60 ft |
| Over 65 ft | 99 | 9.14 m (30 ft) or garage width |
Lot counts are street-line frontages measured from City of Brampton parcel boundaries for 1,769 homes; not surveys. The by-law uses the zoning definition of lot width, which can differ from the frontage at the street, especially on pie-shaped lots. Contains information from the City of Brampton.
Our lot size guide shows which streets have mostly 40, 50 or 60 foot lots. A three-car garage on a wide lot often already sets the width, since the garage width counts when it is greater than the table figure.
What is the 0.6 metre landscaping strip?
By-law 32-2026 requires a strip of permeable landscaping at least 0.6 m (2 ft) wide along both side lot lines of an interior detached lot, so water can soak into the ground. It must be soft surface that can grow plants, such as grass or garden beds. Gravel, stone, interlock and artificial turf do not count as permeable landscaping.
Where the side lot lines converge toward the street, as on many pie-shaped lots on courts and bends, the strip can narrow to as little as 0.15 m within 3 m of the street line, and the driveway taper there cannot cross a line drawn from the street line to a point 3 m back. On semi-detached and townhouse lots, the 0.6 m strip is needed along one side.
Can I widen my driveway with a walkway or hammerhead?
Sometimes. A walkway beside the driveway counts toward its width unless it is separated by at least 1.0 m of permeable landscaping or raised at least 0.15 m, and it can be no more than 1.5 m wide. A hammerhead parking pad needs a lot at least 15 m wide and a front yard 9 m deep.
- Hammerhead: up to 3.7 m wide, extending no more than 4.5 m from the driveway, and at least 3.0 m from the front and exterior side lot lines.
- Walkway across the front: a walkway running generally perpendicular to the driveway is not counted if it is no more than 1.8 m wide.
- Semi-circular driveway: only on lots at least 22 m wide, with two entrances at least 6 m apart and no more than 8.5 m wide.
- One opening: only one driveway opening is allowed per lot, apart from a permitted semi-circular driveway.
The by-law also prohibits driving or parking on lawns, landscaping, permeable strips and walkways.
Do I need a permit to widen a driveway?
Usually, for the part at the street. The City says work on the boulevard, between your property line and the road, needs a Road Occupancy Permit, and changing the curb needs a curb cut permit. Contractors must be licensed by the City. Call Ontario One Call at 1-800-400-2255 at least five business days before digging.
Driveways can be asphalt, concrete, patterned concrete, interlocking brick, paving stone or compacted gravel. If you are not sure your plan fits the by-law, ask City zoning staff before you sign a contract. Parking on the street is governed separately, by the City’s traffic by-law.
Frequently asked questions

Council passed By-law 32-2026 on February 25, 2026. The notice of passing set March 31, 2026 as the last day to appeal.

No. You need the 0.6 m permeable strip along the side lot lines, the driveway must stay within the width limit for your lot, and the rest of the yard must stay landscaped.
Does the garage width matter?
Yes. On lots 50 feet and wider, the maximum is the table figure or the garage width, whichever is greater.
